I live in Africa and play with stones.
NeoPop began rather unexpectedly.
My family and I were living in a small village in South Africa when a running injury suddenly forced me to slow down. And in a small village, when you can’t run, you have two choices: you either start drinking or you become creative.
I chose the latter.
My boys love fishing, and almost all our family outings seemed to be planned around where they could cast a line. I would come along, but with running temporarily out of the picture, I needed something of my own to keep me busy during those long hours by the water.
So I started playing with stones, beads, colours and whatever little treasures caught my eye.
Before long, my creations started coming on our fishing expeditions too. While the boys fished, I would take my latest pieces with me, wandering off to find rocks, beaches, old walls and wild corners where I could photograph them.
Without really planning it, the places we explored as a family began finding their way into the jewellery.
The blues of the ocean. The greens of the Eastern Cape. African trade beads, semi-precious stones and little treasures collected on travels near and far. I began putting together things that perhaps weren’t supposed to go together — and loved what happened.
That spirit is still at the heart of NeoPop.
I don’t make collections of identical pieces. I work instinctively, letting the stones, colours and materials lead the way. Each piece develops its own character — and sometimes I couldn’t make the same one twice even if I tried.
Colourful. Individual. A little unexpected. A little wild.
Made by hand in Cape Town, and always one of a kind.
